Learning science requires much more than just learning science. -- Joe Heafner

Every course you take is the most important course you take. -- Joe Heafner

On this page, I will explain my thoughts on teaching astronomy. Astronomy is properly a branch of physics but it has its own distinctive flavor which I find attractive. My astronomy courses are rather unconventional in that they attempt to promote real critical thinking and to expose students to topics left out of traditional courses.

Here is a description of my personal astronomical equipment.

Take a look at classroom materials I have developed for introductory astronomy.

Follow the development of my introductory astronomy textbook, tentatively titled Learning Critical Thinking Through Astronomy (LCTTA for short).

I collect farmer's almanacs and use them in the classroom as an inexpensive source of accurate astronomical information and to make certain historical and cultural connections that we have lost over the centuries. My students would never get this in any other course at any other institution.
